The Manila Bay Coordinating Office (MBCO) joined the celebration of 2017 World Water Day. It supported and graced the following events: (1) 2017 World Water Day Exhibit; (2) the Pasig River Tour; (3) the Sta. Cruz Wastewater Facility Tour in Laguna; (4) the “Water Craze: Kilos, Kilos para sa Tubig cum Sungka Tournament”; and (5) the World Water Day Awards Night.
The 2017 World Water Day Exhibit, which served as the kick-off event for the 2017 World Water Day celebration, is a 3-day event held at the Market! Market!, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Metro Manila. It showcased the wastewater program of different offices.
The Pasig River and the Sta. Cruz Wastewater Facility Tours sponsored by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) and the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) demonstrated the various efforts of treating and harnessing wastewater.
The River Basin Control Office (RBCO) organized the “Water Craze: Kilos, Kilos para sa Tubig” simultaneously with Maynilad’s “Sungka Tournament”. The joint event aimed at establishing camaraderie among water agencies and institutions, and promote awareness on the importance of protecting and conserving our natural resources especially water.
To cap the celebration, the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) together with the Maynilad sponsored the 2nd World Water Day Awards held on 22 March 2017 at the Quezon City Sports Club, Quezon City. It recognized 14 water champions who have made a difference in the area of water access and environmental sustainability.
World Water Day (WWD) is celebrated worldwide on March 22 of every year to remind the world of the importance of fresh water to mankind and to advocate sustainable management of fresh water resources. Its celebration dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development where an international observance for water was recommended. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. It has been held annually since then.
Each year, the UN-Water, the entity that coordinates the UN’s work on water and sanitation, sets a theme for World Water Day. The theme usually corresponds to a current or future challenge, and is coordinated by one or several of the UN-Water Members with a related mandate. For 2017 the theme is “Water and Wastewater” which focuses on the importance of fresh water and the threat of wastewater in the environment.
