The Manila Bay Coordinating Office (MBCO) of the DENR joins the celebration of World Water Day (WWD) 2016, with this year’s theme “Water and Jobs”.
In efforts to raise awareness on water conservation and protection, activities were held last March 15-22, 2016. Highlights of the celebration were: Sining Ipo Sungka Tournament for the indigenous people of Ipo Dam watershed; the Lake Pandin Tour in Laguna; WWD Fun Run; Pasig River Tour and Awards Night of winners for the online photo and WWD video contest and the awarding ceremony for this year’s “Water Champions”.
The Sining Ipo Sungka Tournament, led by Maynilad, is in support of the Ipo Livelihood Program for indigenous communities within the Ipo Dam Watershed area in Bulacan. This exhibited the unique craftsmanship of indigenous people in making sungka pieces from driftwood.
The Lake Pandin Tour in San Pablo, Laguna, organized by the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) promoted women participation as women bangkeros guided the tourists and participants during the tour.
A World Water Day Fun Run organized by Maynilad and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) was also held to promote awareness on water conservation. A tour along Pasig River, by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) was also held to promote water transport as an alternative means of transportation for Metro Manila commuters.
Celebration of the World Water Day also highlighted the awarding of winners of the online photo contest and WWD video contests, and the recognition of “water champions”. The water champions are individuals, groups or organizations nominated by agencies and institutions for their outstanding efforts, initiatives and advocacy on the protection and conservation of our environment.
